Five candidates and Augusta Township have asked Washtenaw County for a recount of various election results from the Aug. 8 primary.

In the Ypsilanti City Council race, Rod Johnson, who lost to Brian Robb in Ward 3, said he asked for a recount because the race was close. He received 294 votes and Robb got 306.

"You never really know. There may be some uncounted votes,'' Johnson said. "I'd just like to know for sure one way or the other.''

Johnson said the cost of a recount is $10 per precinct, and Ward 3 includes three precincts. "It's not a lot of money for me to know,'' he said.

Augusta Township asked for a recount because its proposed fire millage was tied at 401 votes, effectively defeating the issue.

In the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners race, Karen Lovejoy Roe, Wesley Prater and Mark Namatevs asked for recounts.

Roe defeated Prater for the nomination of the Democratic Party in District 4. She received 1,215 votes and Prater received 805. Roe said she filed for a recount because county officials told her if she did not file, she won't have any input on vote discrepancy.

County Commissioner Ronnie Peterson defeated Namatevs 1,201 to 1,180 in District 6.

In Ypsilanti Township, Ted Vasicek and three other people ran for two park commissioner seats. Vasicek, who is asking for a recount, received 674 votes, trailing the third candidate by about 415 votes.

The recounts will take place the week of Sept. 11, said Derrick Jackson, election director with the county.
